Year 9 Options Evening

FM/DE

17 December 2013

Dear Year 9 Parents/Carers

I am writing to you to advise you of the KS4 options’ process that will be commencing in January 2014. I know that it will only seem like yesterday that your son/daughter was arriving at Dene Magna to start their KS3 curriculum, but the time has come for them to consider the subjects that they will study for in KS4.

This process is absolutely vital. Our experience tells us that the key driver of success in qualifications is that the student is on a course that meets their needs, aspirations and abilities. To that end, we have built in a programme that allows students to explore various options and be supported through the decision making process.

The start of this process was the very successful Careers’ evening that was held on 5 December. I know that this has started students thinking of their futures and I hope it has also created a wealth of debate at home.

The next stage is the ‘Options’ Evening’ which will be held on Thursday 9 January. The format of the evening is as follows:

  • A formal explanation of the process and the options available from Mr Mitchell, together with some reflections from Year 10 students
  • A chance to meet with Heads of Subject, teachers and students from the Options Subjects so that you can get a clear idea of which courses are available, what they involve and the commitment they require
  • Representatives will be attending from Hartpury College and Gloucestershire College on this evening, to talk about KS4 Vocational Courses
  • A representative from Prospects, our Careers’ guidance service, will also be available
  • Copies of the Options Booklet and Options Form will be distributed on this evening. Electronic versions of each document are currently available on the school website.

The evening will commence with the formal talk at 6.00pm (no longer than 30 minutes) and will conclude by 7.30pm. Students are expected to attend with their parents/carers. Can you please complete the slip attached confirming your attendance and return to Tutors before Thursday 19 December 2013.

The Year 9 Subject Parents’ Evening is on Thursday 23 January. This will be your opportunity to speak to specific subject teachers about your daughter/son’s progress. A letter inviting you to make appointments for this evening will be sent out next term.

Year 9 have created a really positive impression so far this year and I know that they will approach this process with maturity and reflection. May I also take this opportunity to wish you a joyous Christmas and New Year and I very much look forward to seeing on 9 January.

Yours sincerely

Fred Mitchell

Deputy Headteacher
